Silver Hill is steeped in the rich history of the South

Nestled along the scenic banks of the Sampit River in Georgetown County, South Carolina, Silver Hill is a place of remarkable history and enduring charm. Once known as Mount Pleasant, the origins of its name remain unknown, but Silver Hill's story is deeply tied to the Withers family, who shaped much of its early character and legacy.

The estate's history stretches back to the early 18th century. In 1735, James Withers owned the property, which he left to his wife, Mary Cartwright Withers, upon his death. The estate then passed to their son, Francis Withers, in 1771, and later to Francis's infant son, Robert Francis Withers, who constructed the house in 1794. Like many of Georgetown County's great estates, Silver Hill built its prosperity on rice cultivation.

Spanning 2,600 acres, Silver Hill has been carefully brought back to life by the Rice family. The 1794 house was a fine example of the architectural sensibilities of its time. Though it eventually fell into disrepair, the structure was thoughtfully and fully restored. From detailed paint studies to the preservation of original writings found on the walls, every effort has been made to honor the estate's heritage. Listed on the National Historic Registry, the home is furnished entirely with period-correct pieces from 1790 to 1810. The care and dedication poured into every detail make Silver Hill a truly special place.

Offering private tours and group tours with an expert on the property. An amazing excursion for those experiencing Historic Georgetown for the first time.
